Mermaid Hair.

taken from one of my poems...

Do you have a childhood fantasy that you have been able to somehow live in your adult life?
When I was a little girl, I loved to swim. I can’t remember back to a time when I didn’t know how to. I was in swimming club and surf life-saving club. Winning trophies when I was only seven years old.  Needless to say I spent a lot of time in the water, be it sea or pool, salty or chlorinated.  I spent more time under the water then above it. Because when I was little, I wanted to be a Mermaid.
I remember swimming under the ocean waves for as long as my little lungs could endure, pretending I had a long fishy tail, and flowing wavy hair. The movie “Splash” absolutely fascinated me and I loved Daryl Hannah. She was THE Mermaid.  And I wanted to be her.

But sadly I came to the conclusion that, eventually I would have to come up for air, I was never going to grow my fish tail no matter how many birthday cake wishes I made,  and that my hair would never be as blonde and wavy as Daryl Hannah’s.
But.....
The other night, while we were out to dinner for my birthday, I wore my hair out and my little niece commented on it. She called it... “Mermaid Hair”!
I was thrilled to bits.
Like how I tastfully smudged her butt?

Ok, so it’s not blonde, it’s brown, but it IS very long, and forms itself into beautiful wavy ringlets after I wash it. It’s one of my favourite things about me (there are not that many). And for her to comment on it, and for my sister in law to look enviously at it, it really made me think back to the days when a little girl splashed through the waves, so desperately wanting to be a Sprite of the Sea.

I have Mermaid Hair J

  2. I love this post!! That is very cool that you have mermaid hair! As you know I love mermaids!! I loved the movie Splash so much when I was a kid too. I loved the way her hair flowed in the water so gorgeous. I have a painting of a mermaid in my bedroom and I want to get more mermaid art prints when we have our child.

  3. i'm a lil jealous of your mermaid hair, whatever color it is! i have puny hair. when my daughter was younger & used to lay in the bathtub with her hair flowing all around her, i would always tell her she had mermaid hair.

  4. One of my favorite movies of all time. I'll bet your mermaid hair is gorgeous!!! When I was little, I always waited for my fin to appear when I got in the ocean. I think I even poured salt in the tub-my mom would remember better than I would. lol

  6. this post was soooo beautiful! What I wouldn't give to have "mermaid hair" too!!!

I know you and I were both water babies (you from a much younger age than I was though)

I used to love swimming in the rain...I would go underwater and sit on the bottom of the pool and look up at the droplets hitting the surface...I bet you are the only one who would understand that! :)

  10. Daryl Hannah was the ultimate mermaid. I remember how "real" her tail looked.

Another water baby right here, to this day, just the smell and I want to jump in. Never wanted to be a mermaid, but wanted to be able to breathe underwater without gills or hold my breath like a dolphin.

    Great compliment, water sprite.

  24. @Ant and Carole, I agree! Payne's grey is one of the Best colours. I use it more than black I think...
    I wouldn't be a Payne's Grey crayon though.

  29. I also wanted to have that hair. You know what? There is a beauty salon in Argentina where they can arrange your hair to look like that. A friend told me about this and I travelled all the way down there to have that hair done. I decided to rent an apartment in buenos aires and make the most of it. It seems that women in Argentina care a lot about their looks so they have all kinds of hair stylists!
